Crab Buddy ("we", "our", "the app") is a crabbing conditions app for California. This policy explains what data we collect, why, and how we handle it. The short version: we collect as little as possible and never sell your data.

What we collect

Email address — When you sign in, we collect your email to create your account. We use Supabase for authentication. We send a one-time code to verify your email; we do not store passwords.

Location (optional) — If you tap "Near Me," we request your device location to sort spots by distance. Location is processed in your browser or on your device. We do not store, log, or transmit your coordinates to our servers.

Analytics events — We use PostHog to understand how people use the app (e.g., which spots are popular, whether features are working). Events are tied to an anonymous ID by default. If you're signed in, we associate events with your account so we can improve the experience. We do not track you across other websites.

Purchase data — If you leave a tip, the transaction is processed by Apple (iOS), Google (Android), or Stripe (web). We receive a confirmation that a purchase occurred but do not see or store your payment method details.

What we do NOT collect

• We do not collect your name, phone number, or physical address.
• We do not access your contacts, photos, camera, or microphone.
• We do not use advertising trackers or sell data to third parties.
• We do not use cookies for advertising. The app uses local storage for session management only.

Third-party services

We rely on these services to operate the app:

• Supabase — Authentication and account management
• PostHog — Product analytics
• Vercel — Web hosting and serverless API
• RevenueCat — In-app purchase management (iOS & Android)
• Stripe — Web payment processing
• NOAA / NDBC / Open-Meteo — Public weather and tide data (no user data is sent to these services)

Each service has its own privacy policy. We encourage you to review them.

Data retention

Your account and associated analytics data are retained as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we remove your email and associated data within 30 days.

Your rights

You can:

• Sign out at any time to stop analytics from being tied to your account
• Request deletion of your account and data by emailing us
• Deny location access — the app works fine without it

If you are a California resident, you have rights under the CCPA. We do not sell personal information. To exercise your rights, contact us at the email below.

Children

Crab Buddy is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

Changes

We may update this policy from time to time. We'll note the "last updated" date at the top. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance.
